Checklist for Choosing a Bathroom Countertop

Member of The Marble Institute of AmericaWhen choosing a new countertop surface for a bathroom, the beginning steps are crucial. Begin by asking yourself some lifestyle questions.

What is the primary function of this bathroom space?
Is it a private master bath, a small powder room, or a guest bath? Is it your personal haven; a place to spend hours reading in the tub or taking your time with your daily routine. Or are you the type of person who is always in a hurry; quickly applying your makeup and unconsciously leaving your red lipstick laying open on your vanity while you rush to dye your hair.

Or perhaps you pay no attention to this space at all, you get in and get out; a quick shower, a hand wash in the middle of the day, or just a monthly cleaning to refresh it before your next house guest comes to stay.

The primary function of my bathroom space:
  • Private Master Bath
  • Small Powder Room
  • Guest Bath
  • I Want A Personal Haven
  • I'm The Hurried Type
  • It's Just A Bathroom

Who uses this bathroom space most often?
Are there primarily adults in the house at most times, or do you have young children who have many friends? Do you have a pre-teen who may hesitate to tell you about a spill on the countertop, and just cover it with a vase instead? Or are you passionate about hosting large dinner parties where entertainment is the goal? Do you consistently have houseguests, or do you tend to enjoy solitude in your home?

This bathroom space is most often used by:
  • Adults
  • Young Children
  • Pre-teens
  • Guests

And finally, what is your style?
What do you want this new countertop to say about you? Are you Traditional, Transitional, Contemporary, Modern? Maybe you're eclectic or have no idea what your style is, but you know what you like when you see it.

    My style is:
  • Traditional
  • Transitional
  • Contemporary
  • Modern
  • Eclectic
  • I'll know it when I see it

Once you have asked yourself some of these questions, you are ready to move on to the next step: Shopping.

  • If this is a full remodel, we suggest choosing your countertop first because chances are high that you will be choosing a natural product, which means it is very hard to match up to too many other selections.
  • If you are just refreshing your home with a countertop change and have no plans to change anything else, take some pictures or other samples with you of the space your new countertop will be located.
  • Be sure to bring measurements with you so that square footage of your surface can be calculated, that way, you can be given a more precise quote for your job.
